March 31, 2014

What lessons does spring teach your students?

It is a time of hope, of renewal, of promise, of perseverance and of determination.

Seeing the first Coltsfoot peaking through the last of the snow at the edge of the road or the Mourning Cloak butterfly flying in the woods is certainly a representation of newness and in many ways is Mother Nature’s beginning of a new year.

It has been said over and over that a picture is worth a thousand words. With this in mind, I encourage you to head out with camera or cameras in hand and have students look for more signs of spring that really speak to them. Perhaps have then explore and then draw pictures with a description of how the image shows the wonderful descriptive words above.

I have seen amazing picture collages in our Spring Kindergarten Collaboration Project this year already. But no matter the grade level – we’re all happy to see Spring showing herself.

What can your class discover? What do your spring photos and your spring stories with your class say about opportunities for the rest of the school year? Share your images, stories, photos and more – how is Hope, Renewal, Promise, Perseverance & Determination shown is your spring explorations this week?
